Farmers Insurance Invitational and the
PGA Tour Team Up . . .
The Century Club of San Diego, the host and organizer of the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Courses, proved once more that golf, the military and fly fishing are synergistic. San Diego, being the home of numerous military commands, gives the Century Club an opportunity to celebrate and thank the military for its contribution to our way of life in protecting our freedoms and liberties from those who would like to take them away. As part of the January 2011 tournament, 500 members of the military attended the annual Military Appreciation Luncheon that kicked off the tournament week. The audience was treated to the words of keynote speaker Navy Captain Jerry Coffee (retired). Captain Coffee was captured by the North Vietnamese in 1966 and incarcerated in the “Hanoi Hilton” for 7 years after his RA 5-C was shot down. After release he continued his career. He ultimately retired and has memorialized his experiences in his book Beyond Survival, which is a great read. Captain Coffee also has become one of the country’s foremost public speakers and, proving that it is never too late to learn the art of fly fishing, wants to learn more about the sport and has chosen Project Healing Waters to assist him. Project Healing Waters’ new affiliate Sun Valley Adaptive Sports/Higher Ground will organize the trip. Captain Coffee will accompany, USMC 1LT PJ Glavey who is recovering at the Balboa Military Hospital from injuries recently sustained in Afghanistan and learning how to be more proficient with his new leg prosthetics.
PJ’ s trip will be underwritten because Jerry gladly donated his speaking fee to Project Healing Waters. Both Jerry and PJ will be welcomed into the Project Healing Waters fold this July and hopefully they will be back for more camaraderie, fly fishing and future mentoring.
