2009 Tie-A-Thon
Organizers for the 2009 Tie-A-Thon announced Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing as the recipient for flies donated at the next gathering of upper Midwest fly tiers. The premise of the Tie-a-thon is like an old fashion barn raisin’. Joining forces again this year to tie flies are with members of St. Joseph River Valley Fly Fishers, Kalamazoo Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, The Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock and Little Elkhart Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Contact information and event details are available on the SJRVFF website [hyperlink to http://www.sjrvff.com/].
If you are interested in tying flies for the 2009 Tie-A-Thon, pick just one of the patterns listed on the SJRVFF website, buy a box of 100 hooks, the materials, and get tying! To encourage participation, Terry Wittorp, Kalamazoo Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited, will have a spectacular lunch for all the tyers, worth far more than 100 flies! There will also be guest tiers throughout the day to demonstrate his or her special pattern. The Tie-a-thon will last from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Saturday March 14, 2009. If you are not a fast tyer and do not think you can complete your 100 flies in one day, then start now and bring your flies to Elkhart. You can certainly donate more than 100 if you are ambitious.
You don’t have to be an expert tyer to donate flies. Many first time fly tyers have participated, this give you a chance to become very good tying at least one fly. If you need help learning a pattern, contact the event organizers Tim Scott or Terry Wittorp, they will be happy to give you a lesson.
The Tie-A-Thon has donated over 7,000 flies to fly fishing based non-profit organizations the last two years; PHWFF is honored to be recognized by the sponsors and donors of Tie-A-Thon 2009. Please consider pledging flies to the 2009 Tie-A-Thon and help support our troops on the water.
