    Richard “Rick” Patterson is the Executive Director of the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers’ Institute, Inc. (SAAMI). SAAMI creates the safety and reliability standards for the design, manufacture, transportation, storage and use of firearms, ammunition, and ammunition components. He works with governments around the world, and the United Nations, to educate and provide fact-based information in their decision-making processes related to SAAMI member-company products. Prior to taking the helm at SAAMI, Patterson created and led the National Association of Shooting Ranges (NASR), and prior to that was an executive with CoastalMart, the retail motor fuels division of a fortune 50 petroleum refiner and marketer. Patterson has developed successful partnerships with many governmental regulatory agencies, in the US and abroad. In 2003, Patterson was awarded the US Environmental Protection Agency’s prestigious Environmental Quality Award for his work related to environmental management of shooting ranges. Patterson serves on the Board of The World Forum for Shooting Activities (and also serves on their Executive Committee and as Chair of their Image Committee). He is a founding member of the Board of Trustees (and member of the Executive Committee) of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, which uses fly-fishing and fly-tying to help with the physical and emotional healing of wounded soldiers. Patterson graduated from Montana State University, cum laude. In his spare time Patterson is an avid fly-fisherman, shooter, hunter, and maker of bamboo fly rods. He has chaired his town’s conservation commission, and was chair of Trout Unlimited’s intervention in the successful and precedent-setting Shepaug River water-rights lawsuit, which ensures wildlife needs are accounted for in Connecticut water-use decision
