William J. Howard III (Bill) is currently a Senior Staff Occupational Therapist at CHI/Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha Nebraska, a position he has been in since May 2015. He has returned to his first passion of taking care of patients one on one. Prior to that,
Bill was the Training Center Manager for the Joint Base Lewis-McChord Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness Training Center (CSF2TC) serving over 20,000 Soldiers and family members of I Corps. He has served in this capacity 1 July 2009 until 25 April 2015.
Bill was a 27 ½ year career Army Medical Command officer retiring as a Colonel, Army Medical Special Corps. At retirement, Bill was the Chief of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Services and Occupational Therapy at Tripler Army Medical Center. He also served as the Traumatic Brain Injury program manager for the Pacific Regional Medical Command. He served as Chief of Occupational Therapy at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington DC from August 2003 until June 2006. It was there, he met CAPT Ed Nicholson, USN Ret., and the idea of providing an opportunity for injured Servicemen to go fly fishing turned into a reality in March 2005, now well known at Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing.
Bill received his Bachelors of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Kansas in 1982, his Masters of Arts in Computer Resource and Information Management from Webster’s University in 1993. He is a 2002 graduate of the U.S Army War College. He is a Certified Hand Therapist, with much experience in the rehabilitation of Soldiers and family members. Bill Howard had a variety of assignments over his 27 plus year Army career. He started as a staff therapist at Brooke AMC in 1982. He had been chief of Occupational Therapy at Evans Army Community Hospital at Fort Carson; the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany; Tripler Army Medical Center, Hawaii from 1998-2001, and Madigan Army Medical Center, Fort Lewis, WA. Other assignments have included a previous tour at Walter Reed Army Medical Center from 1992-1995 and assistant chief of Occupational Therapy at Brooke Army Medical Center. Staff assignments include Assistant to the Army Medical Specialist Corps Chief at Ft. Sam Houston from 1995 to 1997. Bill Howard was part of the 11 person Mental Health Advisory Team III which went to Iraq in October and November 2005 assisting in assessing the mental health of the deployed force, while assigned to Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal with 5 oak leak clusters, Army Accommodation Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and Army Achievement Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster. He has awarded 2 Superior Unit Ribbons. He is a member of the Order of Medical Military Merit.
Bill Howard is married to Susan L. Howard and they live in Omaha Nebraska. Bill has two children from a previous marriage. Lauren B. Howard is a January 2009 graduate of the University of Kansas with a Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA). W. Vincent Howard is a June 2011 graduate of Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA with a BA in Anthropology with an emphasis in bio-cultural studies and a minor in geography.
